The Savoy’s American Bar is the oldest surviving cocktail bar in Britain, first welcoming guests for its popular ‘American-style’ drinks in 1893.
Today, the American Bar enjoys a reputation that positions it at the very forefront of the beverage industry – in 2017 it was voted World’s Best Bar at World’s 50 Best and in 2018 named World’s Best again at Tales of the Cocktail – whilst steeped in an incredible and intricate British cocktail history.
The award-winning American Bar team is behind a unique and innovative cocktail menu, ‘Every Moment Tells a Story’, which draws inspiration from the black and white celebrity portraits by renowned British photographer Terry O’Neill that have adorned the walls of the American Bar since the 1980s. Each cocktail has been inspired by one of the portraits and the story behind its subject, including celebrity royalty such as David Bowie, Judy Garland, Elizabeth Taylor and Dudley Moore to name a few. Charting a flavour journey on a unique tasting graph that indicates length of drink and light vs dark, the menu begins with short and light drinks such as Behind Closed Doors, and moves through long cocktails like The Googly, before finishing with intense short drinks like The Horror Quartet. Each drink is presented in beautifully crafted glassware on top of a bespoke coaster that’s designed like the shutter of a camera.
A pianist aptly playing the best of American Jazz entertains guests in the American Bar every evening of the week.
